This shawl commemorates the sad story of Ophelia, from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, who went mad and tragically drowned. It begins with a brocade-like motif to evoke Ophelia’s dress, which held her aloft in the stream. Then it progresses to a floral motif with nupps, and finally to a rippling feather and fan pattern to represent the water.
Gauge: 25 stitches and 34 rows per 4 inch (10 cm) square in stockinette after blocking.
Finished Measurements: 18 inches (46 cm) wide, 76 inches (193 cm) long.
Yarn Requirements: 1200 yards of laceweight yarn. Sample shown in Wooly Wonka Clotho Laceweight in ‘Ophelia’
Needle Size: 3.0 mm (US 2.5) 32-inch (or longer) circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, yo, k2tog, ssk, sl1 k2tog psso, Centered Double Decrease, single row nupps.
Other Details: This shawl is constructed with a long cast on, joined in the round. The rows are worked outward from the cast on edge, with 4 corner stitches to create a rectangle. Because of this construction, every row is a Right Side row, and you will bind off the whole outside edge. After blocking the cast on is folded in half and sewn together to complete the shawl.
