This shawl was inspired by a lace motif in Sophia Caulfeild’s Dictionary of Needlework, first published in 1882. The top-down construction allows the design to flow downward, giving the feeling of feathers dripping from a stick frame, just as in Greek mythology, Icarus’ feathers melted from their frame as he came too close to the sun.
Gauge: 21 stitches and 38 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) square in stockinette after blocking
Finished Measurements: 72 inches (183 cm) across the top, and 36 inches (91.5 cm) from neck to point.
Yarn Requirements: 1200 yards of laceweight yarn. Sample in Jaggerspun Zephyr Laceweight in ‘Pewter’
Needle Size: 3.25mm (US 3) 24 inch circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, p2tog, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, ssk, yo4, knit front and back.
Other Details: This shawl is worked from the neck down, using yarn overs on each end of each right side row to shape the “wings” and paired yarn overs in the center of each right side row (separated by a center stitch) to shape the point down the spine. These 4 increased stitches are added every right side row (excluding the edging rows), making each row successively longer than the last, so that what started with 5 stitches cast on, ends with hundreds.
This pattern was originally published in Interweave Knits, Summer 2006 issue and can be purchased with the digital back issues from that year from Interweave’s webstore. Also, it was republished in The Best of Interweave Knits, and is featured on the cover of that book.

This shawl is named after the garden at Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire, England. The garden was layed out in the 1920’s by Lawrence Johnston. The Hidcote Garden is characterized by its wild abundant plantings bounded within structured, geometric beds. Hidcote Garden is also famous for it’s lavender varieties. The shawl is divided up into 3 sections. The upper border that resembles a field of flowers. The middle section is clean and geometric, being reminiscent of the beds that the flowers are planted in. The third section was designed to mirror the lavender that is named for Hidcote Garden. This shawl is extra large, making it wonderful to wrap up in for a stroll in the garden, or an elegant evening out.
Gauge: 24 sts and 36 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) square in stockinette after blocking
Finished Measurements: 90 inches (227 cm) across the top, and 44 inches (112 cm) from neck to point.
Yarn Requirements: 1300 yards of laceweight yarn. Shown in KnitPicks Shadow in ‘Oregon Coast Heather’.
Needle Size: 3.25 mm (US 3) 24-29 inch circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, k3tog, k4tog, ssk, sssk, yo, yo2, Centered Double Decrease, sl1 k2tog psso.
Other Details: This shawl is worked from the neck down, using yarn overs on each end of each right side row to shape the “wings” and paired yarn overs in the center of each right side row (separated by a center stitch) to shape the point down the spine. These 4 increased stitches are added every right side row, making each row successively longer than the last, so that what started with a few stitches cast on, ends with hundreds. This holds for all but the final chart, where you are only increasing around the center stitch, and actually decreasing on the edges. The very beginning of this shawl is worked with a provisional cast on and a garter stitch strip, and you will pick up stitches from the side of the strip to start the patterning. This creates a stable edge and makes the 3 stitch edging continuous.

These dainty mitts use a cabled chevron design to accentuate the wrist. Knit them as long as you like for a night at the opera or to keep your arms warm under a dress coat. The matching chevron thumb adds a touch of whimsy.
Gauge: 16 stitches and 20 rows per 2 inches (5cm) square in stockinette.
Finished Measurements: To fit a 7-inch (18 cm) circumference hand. 13 inches (33 cm) from peak to cuff, worked with 4 repeats of Chart 4.
Yarn Requirements: 200 yards of fingering weight yarn. Sample shown in The Fibre Company Canopy Fingering (50% baby alpaca/30% Merino/20% Bamboo, 200 yards per 50 gram skein) in ‘Kafir Plum’
Needle Size: Set of five 2.75 mm (US 2) double pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, knit through the back loop, pkok, Centered Double Decrease, Left Twist, Right Twist, k2tog, ssk, 1 over 1 right cross with purl background, 1 over 1 left cross with purl background,
Other Details: These fingerless mitts begin with a decorative double stranded, double-start cast-on. You cast on for the portion closest to the fingers. Placement of increases and decreases create the peak at the finger opening. You will provisionally cast on the thumb gusset stitches and add them into the round when you reach the appropriate point. The thumb gusset can be placed on the palm, or between the stockinette palm and the patterned mitt back, depending on your thumb placement preference. The provisionally cast on stitches are decreased down to create the gusset. At the wrist the chevron shaping ceases and begins to be knit straight (which pulls the wrist in and makes it snug). The arm is bound off with the stretchy sewn bind-off that when worked with a double strand of yarn approximates the cast-on edge.

This top-down shawl is worked in a simple leaf pattern that is both easy to memorize and easy to work, making the body of the shawl a joy to knit, while the border infuses the piece with a zest that makes this an accessory you’ll reach for again and again. Worked in a heavy fingering weight yarn, it makes a fast and satisfying project, but could be worked in a finer gauge with more repeats to give a more delicate finished piece.
Gauge: 17 sts and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) square in leaf pattern after blocking
Finished Measurements: 56 inches (142 cm) across the top and 28 inches (71 cm) from neck to point.
Yarn Requirements: 550 yards of fingering to sport weight yarn. Sample shown in Reynolds Whiskey in ‘086 – Deep Raspberry’
Needle Size: 4mm (US 6) 24 or 30 inch (61-75 cm) circular or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, yo, knit through the back loop, k2tog through the back loop, wrap & turn short row, p2tog, ssk, Centered Double Decrease, sl1 k2tog psso.
Other Details: This shawl is worked from the neck down. On every right side row, yarn overs on both ends shape the “wings” and paired yarn overs on either side of the center stitch shape the point down the spine. These 4 increases make every right side row longer than the last, so that what started with a few stitches, ends with hundreds. For this reason, you will want to work on a circular needle long enough to comfortably fit all the stitches. This shawl also features a knitted-on border. When the body of the shawl is finished, 17 more stitches are cast on, then the border rows are worked perpendicular to the body rows. As you work the border, you will be knitting one stitch from the body together with one stitch from the border every other row. This creates the border at the same time as you finish the edge of the body. There is no need to bind off the body stitches or to sew a seam to attach the border to the body. For a tutorial on this technique, please visit mimknits.com and view the Knitted-On Border tutorial.

Finished Measurements: 8 inches (20 cm) wide and 60 inches (152 cm) long

Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog, yo, knit through the back loop, ssk, m1, sl1 k2tog psso.

This fingerless mitt pattern follows the lace principles illustrated in the swatches from the lace structure tutorial presented at MimKnits.com. The pattern begins with pyramids of eyelets, then illustrates how moving the decreases changes the flow of the fabric. When you alternate the lace motifs, the pattern evolves into leaf lace. These mitts can be made either long or short to fit a multitude of uses. The short version would be great for spring, or a drafty office. While the long version would be elegant and warm under a dress coat.
Gauge: 34 sts and 42 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) or 17 sts and 21 rounds per 2 inches (5 cm) square in leaf pattern after blocking.
Finished Measurements: To fit 7.5 (8.5) inch or 19 (21.5) cm hand circumference. Short version is 7.5 inches (19 cm) in length, Long version is 13 inches (33 cm) in length and 10.5 (11.5) inches or 27 (29) cm circumference at arm.
Yarn Requirements: For Short Version: 40 (50) grams For Long Version: 70 (100) grams of fingering weight yarn. Sample shown in Shibui Knits Sock in ‘Man Blue’ and “Mulberry’.
Needle Size: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) set of 4 double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge.
Pattern Includes: charts and text translations of charts
Stitches Used: knit, purl, yo, k2tog, ssk, m1, sl1 k2tog psso, Centered Double Decrease.
Other Details: These fingerless mitts are knit in the round from the hand to the arm, with thumb stitches knit onto waste yarn between rows 24 and 25. Thumb stitches are picked up above and below the waste yarn and the thumb is knit in the round. The Short version is knit using only Chart 1, while the Long version is knit by inserting Chart 2 at the indicated point. Chart 2 gradually increases in size on the under-side of the mitts, using repeats A & B as needed to get across the added stitches.

These socks are inspired by the socks found in the tomb of Eleanoro de Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de’Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. She was buried in 1562 after dying of the plague and her crimson silk socks are amazingly well preserved. They were knee-high with turned down cuffs. The lozenge patterned cuffs on this adaptation are NOT turned down and the motifs have been reduced in number of stitches due to gauge differences. See the notes at the end of this pattern for more historical information.

The main leafy motif in this piece makes a great scalloped edge and is deceptively easy to work. When worked with an alpaca blend yarn (as in the wrap version), it drapes and swings in an alluring way reminiscent of diagonal pleats.
