Ann finished her Icarus shawl and it’s lovely!! I love when you can tell from photos that there is silk content 😀

Highly Displeased with Adobe, but glad to have the Mojo back.

“Hate is a strong word, but I really really REALLY don’t like you”

The Plain White T’s

So I’ve been having a bit of drama with Adobe GoLive. On Friday I even had to go home early because I was so frustrated that I was about to throw my computer across the room, thereby breaking the glass door in front of my desk and possible killing small creatures in the yard out front of my office. The main trouble is that whenever I paste the fucker program will close down without saving anything, without even giving me any notice that it’s closing. I have done a bit of troubleshooting and found that it happens when I use shortcut keys (Ctrl + V) or right click & paste or edit, paste. It is completely non-discriminating in the paste method that closes it down, but when one is building a website by copying and PASTEING the old site’s text into a new format and template, having the PASTE function non-functional presents a wee bit of a problem.

Needless to say, I’m a bit frazzled. Add to that the public transport fiasco this morning (a train broke down in the Downtown area, thereby paralyzing ALL trains because they all pass through the downtown area). There was a man at my stop heading the other direction who had been waiting for 45 minutes, was already late with no idea of when the next train would show up. I ended up being about 20 minutes late myself, but thankfully I have a job where they allow me to just make up time when I can.

Having said all of that, I did manage to remember to pack lunch stuff this morning and I have eaten a lovely sandwich consisting of ham, cheese, lettuce, avocado and tomotoes, topped off with honey mustard (mmm…)

Building a website on a deadline has proved stressful. In all honesty, I think this is because I am NOT a web designer, therefore I encounter problems I don’t understand and don’t know how to handle until I do some research. But still… you never realize how deep a site is until you’re trying to transfer all information on it to a new site. I have been covetous of my knitting (read: Relaxing) time because of this, and I’ve been knitting at every opportunity. Waiting on hold for an hour with Adobe? KNIT! Waiting for 5 minutes for a bus? KNIT! Walking to the next train? KNIT! Waiting for pasta to boil? KNIT! As a result, Icarus (which I started last Saturday morning (the 4th, not the 11th), is now on the final chart and is 25 rows from completion. Although I am concerned that if one was just skimming this blog, the shawl might appear to have sprung fully formed from the ground, the weather has simply not been cooperative enough to make for good pictures. Plus, we all know that lace looks like boiled ass before it’s blocked. So I had to choose between showing you a pile of ubiquitous gray string (nice string though it is) or showing you nothing. I think it’s clear which option I chose.

I am also pleased to tell you that I am wearing clean, good smelling clothing. This is only because I managed to do ALL of our laundry on Sunday in between knitting the uber-long rows on Icarus and tidying around the house. I’m still stunned that I managed to get so much done. I even folded the laundry as I brought it out of the dryer! I think my motivation may be back in spades. I’m also noticing that the writing on this entry is 10 bazillion times better than it has been in recent days. Even though I still use made up words like bazillion… hmm…

This return of my long-overdue motivation is just in time, as I have a couple of design proposals for contribution to a book to put together before the end of the month and a ton of knitting to do before Christmas (although I’m almost to the point of being ok with buying gifts this year instead of sticking to the crazed and insanity-inducing plan I had last week to knit JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING on my Christmas list… almost). If the proposals are accepted, then I’ll have to knit one of the pieces before the end of January, and I feel the push to get another magazine submission underway. Welcome back Motivation! I’ve missed you so!

AAAND we have another winner :D

I read over all the caption entries again this morning, and my favorite is Tracy‘s

Close favorites were:

INSANITY: It starts with sock puppets

Socks: Bind on Pick Up

SOCKS: You know they’re ripe when they start talking back

Thanks for playing everybody! It was a whole lot of fun! 😀 Have a good weekend everybody!

M

We have a winner, but she doesn't qualify :)

So the 1000th comment?  That was my Mom, Claudia, but since immediate relatives are automatically disqualified from the contest, the winner was the 1001st comment, Tasha!  Tasha, I’ve sent you an e-mail (2 actually… because I’m retarded), so send me your address and I’ll get some goodies in the mail to you!

And I stand semi-corrected on the drapes bit from yesterday’s post.  I see now that he was probably referring to his statement about “measure for drapes”, but wouldn’t you think that a President should understand that the first female Speaker of the House in an all-male game would be a hot button for feminists?  Wouldn’t you think he would make sure what he said wasn’t BLINDINGLY STUPID and basically guaranteed to piss so many people off?  Everytime I think “Well he must have had some sort of political saavy to get as far as he’s gotten” he does something else to make me think that he must have bought and lucked his way to the Presidency.  Or slipped in while everyone was dismissing him as a hokey cowboy from Texas.  He’s certainly not building any political capital with feminists of the republican or democratic nature.

Hopefully I’ll have an actual post of substance later today… my brain isn’t quite working as well as it should and I have no pictures…. Plus I don’t think that 4 am should count as part of the day.  It certainly doesn’t FEEL like it.  So until later.

M

OK… I can't be the only one…

First thank you SO MUCH to all of you who have left comments! I’m enjoying this immensely! And I’m also BLINDINGLY close to 1000 comments on this wordpress iteration of my blog, so I’ll offer a prize for that too 😀 Keep those motivational poster captions coming though. This is so much fun!

Have any of you watched the press conference President Bush put on today (that link is to the transcript)? This pisses me off to NO END!

This morning I also spoke with the Democrats. I spoke with Senators Reid and Durbin. I congratulated them on running a strong campaign in the Senate. And I told them that, regardless of the final outcome, we can work together over the next two years.

I also congratulated Congresswoman Pelosi and Congressman Hoyer. They ran a disciplined campaign. Their candidates were well organized and did a superb job of turning out their votes.

I told Congresswoman Pelosi that I looked forward to working with her and her colleagues to find common ground in the next two years.

As the majority party in the House of Representatives, they recognize that in their new role they now have greater responsibilities.

And in my first act of bipartisan outreach since the election, I shared with her the names of some Republican interior decorators who can help her pick out the new drapes in her new offices.

WTF! Because she’s a woman her first concern should be the DRAPES in her new office? I am 100% certain that had the Democratic speaker of the House been a man, he wouldn’t not have mentioned drapes, let alone mentioned drapes in his OFFICIAL PRESS CONFERENCE! What an asshole!

Also, I didn’t realize it until today, but all this stuff that seems so far away in Washington hit home today. My supervisor told me that having the House in the hands of the Democrats basically insured the funding for his long-term research project. Something that would have had a 50% chance of getting funded, now has a 90% chance of getting funded.

Bestest Friends in the WORLD! AAAND contest!

I really have fabulous friends. The friend who is getting married? Yeah, she’s the queen of the lot. By the way, her name is Miriam too… so that’s why I don’t refer to her by name…. so I all her Nametwin… so that’s how I’ll probably refer to her through this whole shawl knitting process. It was she that I visited in Philadelphia. I got an e-mail from her:

She: what is a good motivational phrase about knitting?

Me: good motivational phrase about knitting? I don’t know! Umm…. If it sucks, you can always rip it out? I have no idea… sorry!

She: hrm. not quite what I was looking for…. I’ll just have to make up one of my own…

And then she sends me these (you must click to embiggen):

Aaaand she just sent me another one.*hugs her nametwin* Just for that you get an extra EXTRA special shawl 😉
Way to make the best of a mediocre day!META: OK, so I got an idea to make a contest of this. I want a motivational post of THIS image:

So… leave me a comment for the motivational (or demotivational) message to go with this image. It should be in the form of one word first (the big text) and then a bit underneath. Leave it in the comments, I’ll choose the one I like the best and send out a prize. OK? Make sure your e-mail is included so I can choose the winner. I’ll close the contest on Friday, November 10th at midnight Mountain time. GO!

Better-fitting* Toe-up Heel Flap Tutorial

I have a narrow heel and a relatively high instep. This means that a short row heel made with half the total stitches doesn’t fit me. It wobbles around and feels strange. Plus I don’t like the extra straining bits around the front of my ankle. I love the comfort and fit of the cute little cup that a traditional heel flap and turn gives me. So the little * there in the title means that it fits ME better… but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will fit YOU better. But give it a try and tell me what you think.

Step 1: Basics & Calculations

Here you can see the basic parts of the toe-up heel flap. The gussets are worked in the round, then the short rows are worked flat, then the heel is worked back and forth and attached to the remaining gusset stitches, then you go back to working in the round.
We will assume for this example that you are knitting a 64 stitch sock. That means that were you doing a traditional heel flap and turn, you would use 32 stitches for the instep (the front of the sock) and 32 sts for the heel. Generally you would start with these 32 sts and end up with about 22 sts after you turned the heel, then pick up stitches along the heel flap and knit the gusset. But let’s stick with the relevant numbers, 32 sts for instep and heel each and 22 sts for bottom of cup created after heel turn (this part sits RIGHT under your heel). If you want to get REALLY technical, you can figure out how many stitches you normally pick up from the heel flap (n) and calculate thus:

n/(Rows per inch/2)=distance BEFORE heel you want to start gusset increases

For example, for a 64 stitch sock, I would have picked up 13 sts, and my RPI gauge is 12. So 13/6 (which is 12/2)= 2.16″ so I would want to start my gusset increases roughly 2″ before where I want my heel to sit. The dividing row gauge by 2 is because I’m increasing the gusset only every other row, therefore there are half as many increase rows as total rows in an inch of knitting.

Step 2: The Gusset (partially covered in step 1)

In the picture above, you’ll see my roughly 2″ of gusset increases. I’m picky and I use a m1f and m1b so that they mirror each other… but any m1 will do if you’re not so obsessive as I.Step 3: The Short Rows

Remember that number 22? Yes. We will be working the short rows over 22 sts total. Since I’m working the heel on 2 needles with a third for the working needle (I find there’s less stress on the sts if I split them in half), I will work to the bottom of the foot and then k10 and wrap & turn (w&t) (11 total sts on this side) and then work back purling those 10 sts and then p10 from the other side and w&t. Then continue on wrapping the stitch just before the previously wrapped stitch so that you end up with a shape like this

I wrap stitches until I have 6 sts left unwrapped (3 on each side) in the middle. Then on the next row (right side row) you will pick up and knit all wraps on that side together with the stitches they were wrapping. On a right side row, I prefer to knit them together through the back loop. Then turn, slip the first stitch and purl across until the other side’s wrapped stitches which you will now purl together with the sts they were wrapping.Step 4: The Flap

Now that you’re done with the cup at the bottom, your rows will all begin with a slipped stitch and end with a joining of the heel flap sts (those 22 sts we calculated before) with the remaining gusset stitches. The beginnings of this can be seen in the picture above. For this sock it means that I would knit until I had decreased those sts back to 32… but I’ll tell you about a little trick later. So we have 22 heel flap sts, but we need to end up with 32 sts total on the back of the sock, right? So you will work the heel flap, attaching it as you go (and decreasing gusset sts in that way) until you have 5 sts on each side of the heel flap unworked (these sts were previously from the gusset).

So here’s the trick to not having holes in the sock where the heel flap ends and the round knitting begins. Leave the last set of those heel flap decreases until you’re working in the round again, so that the first round after the heel flap would have you work the heel flap stitches, then decrease (ssk) knit the 5 sts left from the gusset, knit the instep sts, then knit the 5 sts left from the gusset on the OTHER side, then decrease (k2tog). Voila! A hole-less toe-up heel flap that is snugger and more comfortable (at least for me).

As for me, I am at an impasse on this celtic sock until I can get some serious charting and swatching done, but I’ve started Icarus again, and I’m loving it just as much as the first time I knit it! I’m still amazed that this shawl came off of my needles and out of my brain! I also finally blocked the cashmere scarf and wrap, but I can’t bring myself to send it off until I’ve shown the SnB grrls.

You MUST go see Lucinda‘s finished Hidcote Garden shawl! It’s just beautiful!

And don’t miss Donna‘s finished Icarus! She knit it in Misti Alpaca, which is what I originally proposed it to be knit with. It’s wonderful Donna!

So excited I'm going to explode!

So my best friend told me this week that she’s getting married!  Congrats lovey!  And I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of days…. I love her so much and I really wanted to make her something phenomenal for her wedding.  Something heirloom quality, something lace.

I’ve got a while because she’s not getting married until July, but I’ve pretty much settled on a shawl… maybe a square shawl as I’d like her to be able to wrap her babies in it, or use it for that sort of thing.  Other important family things…. so I’m open for recommendations as to pattern (she’s like me and likes simple classic things, nothing too flashy) and if you’ve got a favorite really nice cobweb weight yarn that would have good drape (I’m looking for stuff about 7000 yards per pound right now) I’d appreciate the recommendations.  I’ve got my eye on some white cashmere.  If I need to design it, I’d also like people’s reviews for books like Sharon Miller’s Heirloom Knitting.  Anybody got any thoughts?

Woot! Stuff!

Dis over at A Little Loopy (love you girls!) posted a link to The Loopy Ewe and I went strolling on over because Dis mentioned my 2 favorite 4 letter words – SOCK YARN! I’ve been dying to try some Fleece Artist Sock yarn and so I bought myself a skein in the beautiful Mahogany Color. I also bought this nifty book. It’s full of pages to have your family and friends put their sock info in! I have lost SO MANY post-it notes with people’s shoe sizes and foot measurements written on them that I figured I couldn’t afford NOT to buy this book 😀 Plus you could pass it around at the next family gathering and have everyone put their info in it, and then whenever you’re ready to knit socks for people, you don’t have to come up with a sneaky way to ask for their foot circumference.

Why is it that every time I’m working monogomously on a project, or on a really BIG project I start craving sock yarn? I’ve got another skein of trekking that’s calling my name as well as the Regia for gift socks and another historical sock design. SOCKS! I can’t stop thinking about SOCKS!

M

Oh, and btw, just thought you all should know that I LOVE Dropkick Murphys :D  Can you honestly get better than Irish Folk Punk?  I’ll answer that for you.  NO!  Also, if you’re looking for a less known band, check out Elliott Brood.  Rock + Banjo.  ‘Nuf said.

Woot! Success!

Friends, I have succeeded in my quest for toe up heel perfection! Behold!

OK, maybe not prefection, as those looser stitches could be tightened up a bit, but it’s pretty near perfection for me :)You may recall that I first knit a toe-up heel flap with the Crushed Strawberry socks. I used Cookie‘s Toe up heel flap option from Baudelaire, but I felt that the flap was too short. I reasoned that to make the heel flap longer, you would just have to knit more gussett increase rows and then it would take longer to bind them off with the flap and you’d end up with a longer flap. But when I got to looking at the heel on the Crushed Strawberry Socks, I realized that the roundy pocket part at the bottom (the part that sits right around and under your heel) was REALLY big. For people with a wide heel, it might work, but for me with a narrow heel? No Bueno!

I reckoned that I would need to use fewer stitches to make the flap and cup less wide, but the problem was that however many stitches you put into the heel ended up being the number that became the back of the sock, (i.e. if you had 64 sts to begin with, and then you used 32 sts for a heel, you’d end up with 32 sts from the heel becoming the back of the sock cuff. Compare this to a traditional top down heel where you begin the heel flap with half the stitches… i.e. 32 sts and end up with only 20)

So at SnB on Tuesday with Margene as a sounding board, I worked out that I would need to use fewer stitches for the heel, but still keep some stitches from the bottom of the foot out of the heel to fill in the rest of the back cuff… so what I ended up with is that picture above. It fits MARVELOUSLY and feels great! And really doesn’t look too far off from a traditional top down flap heel.

Now I need to do some researching and some charting to get the rest of this sock done. I have a feeling I may have to rip and reknit a LOT to get it right, but I’m really excited to see it finished.

p.s. I forgot to add that Rosemary‘s shawl pins (including a pin inspired by the Mountain Peaks Shawl) are now not only available through her website but at Schoolhouse Press!  Congrats Rosemary!
